ABOUT Chesapeake climate action network
The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) is the first grassroots, nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to fighting global warming in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Our mission is to build a diverse movement powerful enough to put our region on the path to climate stability, while using our proximity to the nation’s capital to inspire action in neighboring states, regions nationwide, and countries around the world.
Take it from 350.org founder Bill McKibben: " CCAN is the best regional climate organization I've ever seen, anywhere in the world."
About THE polar bear plunge
Each January, hundreds of passionate climate activists run, walk or skip into the icy cold Potomac River to raise money for CCAN. Just like a charity fun run, our supporters take pledges from their friends to #TakeThePlunge and support CCAN’s vital mission. And guess what? We're going on our 15th year of running this amazing event!
The very first "Polar Bear Plunge" was held in December of 2005 and brought in just over a dozen supporters... Since that time, the event has exploded in success, growing each year, and consistently smashing fundraising goals! The humble beginnings of this event sowed an incredible foundation for what is now CCAN's largest signature fundraising event.
